Brevard Public Schools (BPS) in seeking its new superintendent of schools. BPS is one of Florida’s highest performing school districts, earning an “A” overall from the state Department of Education. BPS ranked number 2 among the 14 large Florida districts in 2017 for overall student achievement, and number 2 for college and career acceleration.
Brevard County -- population 589,162 -- is known as the Space Coast for its signature aerospace industries including Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The school district is Brevard’s largest employer with 9,000 employees serving more than 73,000 students. BPS is the 47th-largest district in the United States and the 10th-largest in Florida.
BPS’ mission is simple: “To serve every student with excellence as the standard.” Although about 57 percent of students qualify for free- or reduced-price school meals, student achievement surpasses state averages in nearly every grade and subject. In addition, the Brevard County School Board has made community engagement a top priority. In 2017, 64 of Brevard's 82 traditional public schools received the Florida Five-Star School Award, which recognizes schools that are measurably "committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning." Three of Brevard's schools were named National Blue-Ribbon Schools. In 2018, U.S. News ranked three Brevard high schools among the top 50 in Florida – and two in the top 10.
